The inaugural Romanian Open will feature the country’s top-ranked star in Simona Halep as she encounters Italy’s Roberta Vinci to crown the first ever Bucharest champion. This is the sixth time these two competitors will cross paths on the professional tour with Halep leading the head to head series 3-2.
World No. 3 Simona Halep is through to the finals on home soil, but it was not without its fair amount of troubles. After cruising through the opening set against Monica Niculescu, Halep would drop the second set 6-4, before storming back to close out the match with a 6-1 third set.
Following up on her Wimbledon doubles title win with partner Sara Errani, Roberta Vinci is through to the finals in Bucharest, following a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Kristina Kucova. The Italian stormed to a 4-0 lead in the opening set against the world NO. 166 and would hold strong for the remainder of the contest.
“It was a semifinal, so, of course, it was a tough match,” Vinci said. “It was difficult conditions – a lot of wind, no sun, rain – but I played a good game and am really happy to be in the final.
“It will be a tough match. The support will be with the Romanian girl and not me, but it’s natural. For now, I just want to stay focused and I will try my best.”
This is the sixth time these two competitors will meet on the professional tour, with Halep leading the series 3-2. The Romanian won the last two consecutive encounters and went 2-1 against Vinci in 2013. After digging deep in her last two matches, Halep will look to culminate her week with another title win this season.
Prediction: Simona Halep in Three Sets
