Mona Barthel completed her fantastic week on the tour with a straight sets victory over Chanelle Scheepers to lift the Collector Swedish Open crown on Sunday. The win marked the third WTA Tour title in her career.
It was far from an easy week for Barthel, who needed to get through several tight matches before even reaching the final on Sunday. Her first was against Canadian qualifier Gabriela Dabrowski in the second round, and the second against Spain’s Sílvia Soler-Espinosa in the semifinals. In the final, Barthel needed to recover from 5-3 down in the second set to defeat her South African adversary 6-3, 7-6(3).
Barthel has now won titles over three consecutive season dating back to her first title win at the 2012 Hobart Open.
“It’s been an amazing week for me – I cannot believe I won the title!” Barthel beamed afterwards. “It was like a perfect week for me. I was fighting a lot – in some matches I was behind, and I was just fighting for every point. I’m just happy everything worked out. I love this tournament so much. I can’t wait to defend my title.”
Barthel will now take a few days off before relocating to the United States to prepare for the North American hard court swing over the next few weeks.
“Now I’m going to have a couple of days of rest! My body needs it. I was so tired in the second set, and I just told myself I need this one, because I didn’t know if I’d have enough energy for a third set! “So a couple of days of rest now, then heading to the US to prepare for the tournaments there.”
Andreja Klepac and María-Teresa Torró-Flor defeated British duo Jocelyn Rae and Anna Smith 6-1, 6-1 in a 43-minute final to secure the doubles title.
