Following tight semi-final match-ups, defending champion Elina Svitolina and Bojana Jovanovski will meet in the final of the Baku Cup on Sunday afternoon. This will mark the first time the two Top 40 competitors cross paths on the WTA tour and will see a battle between two of the sport’s rising stars.
Svitolina, the second seed at the tournament, needed 1 hour and 57 minutes to dispatch veteran Italian Francesca Schiavone in their semi-final match-up on Saturday. Elina saved 8 of 11 break points faced and converted five of her own to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat in the third set.
The 19-year-old has now dropped just one set all week and moved her record to 9-1 in Baku. She is one win away from retaining her maiden title on the professional tour.
Fifth seed Bojana Jovanovski also needed three sets to secure her spot in the final of the tournament, as she defeated Stefanie Voegele 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 on Saturday afternoon. Jovanovski’s resilience and determination was evident during the contest, as she rallied from a set down to force a decider and then proceeded to work her way back from a 4-1 deficit in the final set.
The 21-year-old is 10-1 in Baku, and similar to Svitolina, won her first title at this event in 2012.
The Baku Cup final will now feature a contest between two former champions and budding talents, who have both shown signs of their full potential on the WTA tour. Both Svitolina and Jovanovski have played some remarkably consistent tennis this week and it would be difficult to favour either competitor wholeheartedly ahead of the match.
Prediction: Elina Svitolina in Three Sets
