Serbian star Ana Ivanovic and Sabine Lisicki will take part in one of the more exciting match-up in the opening round of the Bank of the West Classic. This is just the third time these two competitors will cross paths on the professional tour, with the series tied at 1-1. Lisicki won their most recent encounter at the Wimbledon Championships last month.
Fifth seed Ana Ivanovic is taking part in her first tournament since her third round exit at SW19 to Lisicki last month. Prior to that, she had successfully won her first career grass court title in Birmingham. The hard court portion of the season is usually a strong one for the Serb, as she reached the semi-final round in Carlsbad last season and the fourth round of the US Open. She will look to take advantage of her relatively weak showings at the Rogers Cup and the Cincinnati Masters last season and earn some extra ranking points over the next three weeks.
World No. 29 Sabine Lisicki has not played a match since she was knocked out of the Wimbledon Championships in the quarter-final round. Having dropped significantly in the rankings over the past few months, the German No. 2 will be looking to work her way back into the Top 20 with strong showings in the US Open Series.
This is just the third time these two competitors will meet on the professional tour, and also the third time in as many months. Their most recent encounter at the Wimbledon Championships last month, which Lisicki won in straight sets to move onto the second week of the tournament. She lost their earlier meeting in Stuttgart in a match where she was clearly hindered with shoulder pain.
While Lisicki is a force to be reckoned with on grass, Ivanovic should have the advantage in the pair’s first hard court meeting. In terms of consistency, the Serbian No. 2 has taken part in one of her best seasons as a professional and will look to excel at the season’s final Grand Slam event in a few weeks time.
Prediction: Ana Ivanovic in Three Sets
