Former world No. 1 Victoria Azarenka is finally ready to come off the sidelines. The Belarusian has been off the WTA tour since she injured her foot during the hard court season. Her first opponent during her comeback will be the crafty Camila Giorgi, who will be a tough first test back for Azarenka. This marks the first time these two competitors will cross paths on the professional tour, and if Azarenka is actually healed up, this could certainly be a compelling match-up.
It is extraordinary to believe that Azarenka has only played three tournaments this season, the most recent of which she was ousted at in the opening round with a bagel in her opening set. Azarenka has not played a match since Indian Wells, where she was ousted by American Lauren Davis in 2nd round, and hasn’t looked in shape from then, as she has pulled put of all the later tournaments. She initally intended to try again in Monterrey but decided to wait a little while longer and eventually pulled out of both Madrid and Rome. The two-time Grand Slam winner attributed the injury to fatigue, as she had been playing at high intensity for three consecutive years without a real break.
Now that she is fully rested and prepared to return, Azarenka will begin her grass court season with a match-up against Italian youngster Camila Giorgi.
On the other hand, Camila Giorgi has already started her grass court season last week in Birmingham, where she reached the second round of the tournament before losing to Dunne in straight sets. She will be looking to use her extra court time as an advantage when she faces the former top-ranked Azarenka.
This is the first time that Azarenka and Giorgi will cross paths on the professional tour. It is hard to gauge the potential result of this contest, as we have not seen Azarenka on court since early March. If she is healed up, she will still ned to find her range and adjust to being back in professional matches, al of which does not bode well for her chances tomorrow.
Prediction: Camila Girogi in Three Sets
