Although she may not be opening up Center Court on Tuesday, all eyes will be on 2012 Wimbledon Champion Serena Williams as she begins her latest campaign for another title at SW19. The American will begin her fortnight with a match-up against Anna Tatishvili, whom she defeated in Bastad last year for a 1-0 lead in the head-to-head series.
World No. 1 Serena Williams is coming off a second round exit at the French Open, and will now begin a campaign for a sixth crown at Wimbledon. The American will have her work cut out for her this time around, as she will come up against a tough draw this season. Williams is in the same quarter as French Open champion Maria Sharapova and French Open semi-finalists Eugenie Bouchard and Andrea Petkovic. Williams could face Bouchard in the fourth round and Sharapova in the quarter-finals.
Anna Tatishvili may not have gotten out of the qualifying round of several of the WTA events she tried out for, but she got into both the French Open and Wimbledon. She lost her Roland Garros opener to Kurumi Nara, and is now faced with an even tougher first round opponent this time around in Serena Williams. The last time they met, Tatishvili won a total of five games, and that was on hard court. Whether she can win that many games on grass is debatable.
Unlike her usual start to the season, Williams is neither the Australian, nor French Open champion heading into Wimbledon, which will likely add to her motivation to succeed over the coming fortnight. While upsets have been known to occur in the early rounds at this event, this is unlikely to be the case this time around.
Prediction: Serena Williams in Straight Sets
