An intriguing opening round match is set to take place in Eastbourne between Top 20 players Caroline Wozniacki and Samantha Stosur. This marks the seventh time these two competitors will cross paths on the professional tour, with the Head to Head series tied at 3-3. Two of those meetings took place on grass and is also tied at 1-1.
After a surprisingly week start to her season in Australia, Samantha Stosur was expected to pick up the pace in the clay court portion of the season, but had a less than stellar start on the red dirt, as she lost in the third round in Charleston to Lucie Safarova, and then a surprising opener to Timea Bacsinszky in Portugal. She would then pick up the pace over the next few weeks, as she picked up wins over Dominika Cibulkova in Madrid and Sabine Lisicki in Rome to add to her confidence heading into the French Open. She would finish off that portion of her season with a fourth round appearance at Roland Garros before losing to the eventual champion Maria Sharapova.
Stosur would quickly shift her attention to grass, where she reached the second round in Birrmingham before losing to fellow Australian Casey Dellacqua.
Caroline Wozniacki has been one of the sad stories on the tour so far this season. After her break-up with fiancée Rory McIlroy, many expected the Dane’s next few weeks to be close to disastrous. The French Open was just her second clay court tournament that season, and she lost her opening round match there to Wickmayer in three sets. After taking a couple of weeks off to recover from her personal issues, Wozniacki is now in Eastbourne in preparation for the Wimbledon Championships.
This marks the seventh time these two competitors will cross paths on the professional tour, with the series tied at 3-3. Wozniacki won their most recent meeting back in 2012, but they each hold a win over the other at this event in Eastbourne. Stosur won it here in 2008, while Wozniacki took the more recent one in 2009. It will be interesting to see who wins the rubber match five years later.
Prediction: Samantha Stosur in Three Sets
