  Petra Kvitova

The first champion vs. champion match is scheduled to take place on Thursday afternoon, as 2011 champion Petra Kvitova and five-time title holder Venus Williams will meet for the fifth time in the professional tour. It is a highly compelling clash and should make for a fascinating encounter. Kvitova leads the series 3-1, including a victory in Doha earlier this season. Check out the Williams vs Kvitova Head to Head matches.

Despite withdrawing from last week’s event due to an injury, Petra Kvitova does not appear to be displaying any hindrances, as she stormed past Mona Barthel 6-2,6-0. The Czech No. 1 hit 7 aces, 25 winners and only 9 unforced errors for a very clean performance. She also won 10 of 11 net points during the match.

The No. 6 seed is prepared for her upcoming contest against Williams:

“Venus is a big champion here as well,” Kvitova said. “She likes the grass, and I’m totally the same. And I’m looking forward to this match. I think it’s going to be a great fight. We played in Doha I think, and then in Tokyo, and it’s always a very tough match, so I’m expecting the same thing here.”

While Kurumi Nara had her chances to take the lead over Williams, the experienced former champion was able to come back from a 0-3 deficit and a 4-1 down in the tiebreak to earn the 7-6, 6-1 win. Williams was in top form this time around and stuck 46 winners to her 16 unforced errors.

“Walking out there you know no one’s going to give you a match, especially at the majors, so I knew all points I would have to work for,” Williams said. “”I think I was able to lift my game a little at the important points, which is what you want to do. Then also in the second set I lifted my game.”

This is the fifth time that Williams and Kvitova will cross paths on the professional tour, with the Czech leading the series 3-1. This will likely be a enticing match-up on grass, as both looked great in their second round meetings. I believe this contest will favour Williams, who has shown an intensity on the tour this season that Kvitova has lacked.

Prediction: Venus Williams in Three Sets
