2011 Wimbledon Champion Petra Kvitova got off to a winning start at SW19 and will now meet Mona Barthel in the second round of the tournament. This is just the second time these two competitors will meet on the professional tour with Kvitova leading the head-to-head series 1-0.
Sixth seed Petra Kvitova was one of the players who had an asterisk next to her name ahead of the tournament, as she withdrew ahead of her quarter-final match at Eastbourne due to a right thigh strain. All that worry disappeared on Monday afternoon, when the Czech No. 1 dropped only three games in her 6-3, 6-0 win against fellow Czech Andrea Hlavackova.
“Andrea played well,” Kvitova said. “It was our first meeting in a long time. It’s not easy to play Czech girls. I was expecting a tough match and I’m just glad that I won the last point.
“I feel better, which is nice news. I had to pull out of Eastbourne to be ready for Wimbledon, so I’m just glad that it’s getting better.”
Germany’s Mona Barthel also played a dominant match on Monday as she defeated Italy’s Romania Oprandi 7-5, 6-0 to secure her spot in the second round of the tournament. She will now be faced with a far tougher challenge in the former champion and is desperately looking to pass the second round of the tournament for the first time since 2011, where she produced her best showing at the event to finish in the fourth round.
This is just the second time that Kvitova and Barthel cross paths on the professional tour and the first time since 2012. Their last meeting took place on hard court, but this is a surface that favours the former champion, as she looks to make another deep run at The Championships this year.
Prediction: Petra Kvitova in Three Sets
