Reigning French Open champion Maria Sharapova stormed through her opening round match to set up a clash with Timea Bacsinszky. This is the second time they meet on the professional circuit and the first time in eight years.
A decade after her staggering upset of Serena Williams at the Wimbledon finals, Russian sensation Maria Sharapova stepped out onto the grass courts of the All England Club to face British wildcard Samantha Murray. After a tough opening frame, Sharapova went into cruise control and proceeded to win the next 11 straight games. Considering her opponent was ranked over 240 places below her, it was exactly the kind of start she needed at the tournament.
“There’s always a bit more tension coming into the first round of a Grand Slam,” Sharapova said. “It was such a quick turnaround. Just a couple weeks ago you’re on the clay, coming onto the grass now. It’s a new surface and it’s a different feeling.”
“It was obviously a bit slower start than I wanted, but I think as the match progressed, I got more comfortable, found my toss a little bit better. I think my serve percentage went up, which was quite important considering she did want to play an aggressive game off of the second serves.”
World No. 85 Timea Bacsinszky reached the second round of The Championships with a straight sets win over Canada’s Sharon Fichman. The match, which ended 6-1, 6-3, saw the Swiss player hit 5 aces, 26 winners and just 13 unforced errors to close out the match in 1 hour and 11 minutes.
This is the second time these two competitors will cross paths on the professional tour, with Sharapova leading the series 1-0. The former champion is in fine form as of late and will be keen on another quick contest come Thursday afternoon.
Prediction: Maria Sharapova in Straight Sets
