Only two third round matches remain when the Wimbledon Championships kicks off the second week of the prestigious Grand Slam tournament, one of which is an entertaining contest between American John Isner and Spain’s Feliciano Lopez. This is the fourth time these two competitors will cross paths on the professional tour, with Isner leading the head-to-head series 2-1.
Top ranked American John Isner reached the third round of The Championships last week when he defeated Jarkko Nieminen in three sets – including a marathon first-set tiebreak that went 17-15. Not only did he not face a single break point on Thursday, he is also yet to be broken in tournament through two rounds.
“For whatever reason, when I’m in [tie-breaks], I always have a lot of adrenaline and I’m always serving my best, better than what I was getting to that tie-breaker. That was the case today in the first and second set. Only lost one point on my serve. The name of the game for me is just taking care of the two points on my serve, put the pressure back on my opponent. That’s what I did.”
Three-time Wimbledon quarter-finalist, Feliciano Lopez, is through to another third round at the Championships, after he dispatched Croatia’s Ante Pavic comfortably in straight sets. He has appeared determined to perform well on this surface, as he enters as the defending Eastbourne champion, which is why he will be a force to be reckoned with against Isner on Monday.
This is the fourth time these two competitors will cross paths on the professional tour, with Isner leading the head-to-head series 2-1. The last time they crossed paths was over two years ago in Houston, and this will also be theirk first meeting on grass. Lopez is coming off a strong week in Eastbourne, where he managed to retain the championship. Whether that added confidence will give him an extra advantage is debatable, as Isner’s game is a grueling one to withstand over five sets.
Prediction: Feliciano Lopez in Five Sets
