World No. 20 Gael Monfils has officially withdrawn from next week’s Topshelf Open in s-Hertogenbosch due to a knee injury he suffered during the Gerry Weber Open this week.
Monfils, who lost to Kei Nishikori earlier in the week, has had knee issues dating back to 2009 and chose to withdraw from the event to avoid any concerns ahead of Wimbledon. Monfils appeared fine against Benjamin Becker in his first round match but clearly looked weakened against Nishikori, and that was likely due to an injury on the surface.
“I don’t like grass because I am always fearful that I might get injured,” he said in Halle. “Already I have some pain in my knee.”
Jesse Huta Galung will now replace Monfils in the main draw. The No. 147’s best result so far this year was reaching the semi finals of the ATP Heilbronn Challenger.
The Topshelf Open takes place between Jun 15-21 in s-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands.
