Former world No. 1 Victoria Azarenka’s highly anticipated comeback was unceremoniously ended less than two hours after it began, as Italy’s Camila Giorgi pulled off the impressive upset.
The soft-spoken Giorgi, who has been an inconsistent talent over the past couple of years, has gradually honed her craft and managed several impressive upsets this season, the latest of which being a 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 win against the Belarusian. Girogi had to also mount a comeback from a set down, as Azarenka snatched the opening set after reeling of the last four games.
“It was a great match. I really enjoyed it,” the soft-spoken Giorgi said afterwards. “Today I was just focused on my game like always. I just tried to play aggressively out there, and that’s all.
“I was just thinking about my game.”
Giorgi’s next opponent will be British wildcard Johanna Konta, an Eastbourne native, who beat Swiss qualifier and WTA Rising Star Belinda Bencic earlier in the day.
