Riding high off her very first title win on grass, Ana Ivanovic is perfectly prepared for her upcoming campaign at the Wimbledon Championships. She will begin her week against durable Italian Francesca Schiavone, whom she holds a dominant 5-0 head-to-head record against.
After an unlucky run at the French Open, which ended in a third round loss to Lucie Safarova, Serbian No. 2 Ana Ivanovic rebounded tremendously at the start of her grass court season in Brimingham, where she defeated the likes of Lauren Davis, Shuai Zhang and Strycova to win the title – her first on that surface. It was also her third title of the season, her best performance since 2008. To add to the world No. 11’s accolades this season, she also leads the record for matches won so far this season with 37.
Italy’s Francesca Schiavone was also present at Eastbourne, but she lost her opening match in the main draw, after working her way through three rounds of qualifying. Prior to that, she was in Birmingham, where she defeated Zheng before succumbing to Sloane Stephens in the following round. Although she had a weak start to her season, Schiavone has picked up wins over the likes of Garbine Muguruza and Eugenie Bouchard (both on clay) and will be looking for another big upset to kick start her fortnight at SW19.
This marks the sixth time these two competitors will cross paths on the professional tour, with Ivanovic dominating the series with a 5-0 record. Their most recent encounter took place in Linz last season, which all but one two of their previous meetings were on hard court. This is the first one on clay. While Ivanovic deserves to be a hefty favourite ahead of this contest, it is likely that the Italian could snatch a set off her if she loses focus or succumbs to early jitters.
Prediction: Ana Ivanovic in Three Sets
