Ana Ivanovic heads into Wimbledon with the perfect preparation after a dominant display to take the AEGON Classic title in Birmingham thanks to a 6-3 6-2 victory of Barbara Zahlavova-Strycova.
The Serbian had been in fine form all week, not dropping a set en route to the final. A slow start saw her fall down a break but that was quickly erased in the very next game. A single break was enough in the first set and after breaking early in set two, the match was close to over as a contest.
That didn’t stop it from being an entertaining encounter with both players showcasing great tennis throughout. Midway through the second set, Ivanovic hit two terrible overheads on easy putaways. Given a third chance in the same game, she finally put one away before sarcastically celebrating as the crowd applauded.
Ivanovic is the only player to make four finals this year and with victory here she matched the three titles held by Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova.
“I’m definitely very excited” said Ivanovic. “I didn’t think much about even winning title when I came here. I really wanted to just get into it and see how I feel on grass. I didn’t have too much preparation coming into this week even, but I really felt better from each match. I am just so happy to win that title. It really means a lot to me.”
Ivanovic will move up 6th in this year’s Road To Singapore rankings, overtaking Dominika Cibulkova.
