An interesting, albeit slightly unexpected semi-final is scheduled to take place on Saturday afternoon at the Mutua Madrid Open, as fourth seed Simona Halep meets Czech No. 1 Petra Kvitova for a spot in the final. This marks the second time these two competitors will meet on the professional tour, with Halep leading the Head to Head series 1-0.
Petra Kvitova found herlsef in the semi-final stage of the event, even though he last match was a third round victory over fellow Czech Lucie Safarova. She rallied to recover from a early 4-0 deficit against Safarova, and would eventually find her form and defeat the Czech 6-4, 6-3 to reach the final eight in Madrid. She would then recover a walkover into the semi-finals, after Serena Williams withdrew from the event with a left thigh injury.
The 2011 Madrid Open champion has not gotten past the second round in her last two attempts but is now one win away from reaching the tournament finals.
World No. 5 Simona Halep faced Ana Ivanovic in her quarter-final match-up, where she stormed through the first set 6-2, before quickly jumping to a break lead in the second set for 3-1. From there, the fourth seed once again cruised through the set, and served for the match leading 5-2. Less than two minutes later, she concluded the match 6-2, 6-2.
The Romanian will overtake Victoria Azarenka at No. 4 in the rankings should she win the title this week in Madrid.
Both competitors have made it through some tough matches this week in Madrid, yet it is Halep who is proving to be more consistent on the tour so far this season. That should heavily factor into tomorrow’s result.
Prediction: Simona Halep in Three Sets
