Following her fantastic opening round match-up, Simona Halep will continue her campaign in Madrid with a match-up against Spain’s Lara Arruabarrena. This marks the second time these two competitors will meet on the professional tour, with Simona leading the head-to-head series 1-0 with a victory in Hobart last season.
Fourth seed Simona Halep dominated her German adversary Julia Goerges in their opening round match, as she lost only two games in the entire contest. It was a fantastic display from the Romanian, and snapped a three-match losing streak at this event dating back to 2011. She lost in 2012 to Venus Williams, and last season to Lourdes Dominguez Lino.
Spain’s Lara Arruabarrena defeated Pironkova 6-3, 6-4 on Saturday to set up her Wednesday clash with Simona Halep. She will be rested and prepared for the tough match-up against the Romanian.
This marks the second time these two competitors will meet on the professional tour, with Halep leading the series 1-0. She earned a victory last season in Hobart, where she beat the Spaniard 6-3, 6-2 – barely breaking a sweat in the process. While this match-up will take place on clay, it is hard to imagine anyway Lara can defeat an injury-free Halep.
