Sara Errani and Andrea Petkovic will meet in the opening round of the Madrid Open on Saturday morning in what should be an intriguing contest. This is the second time these two competitors meet on the professional tour, and the first time in four years. Their only other encounter took place in the first round in Madrid as well, with Petkovic winning that match-up. Check out the Errani vs Petkovic Head to Head.
Italian No. 1 Sara Errani has not had the best of starts to her 2014 season. After reaching the finals in Paris, Errani failed to go past the third round in either Indian Wells or Miami, which ultimately pushed her ranking just outside the Top 10. While that may be the case, Errani found her form later on at the start of the clay court portion of the season when she reached the quarter-final in Charleston and the semi-final in Stuttgart.
It has been a turbulent couple of years for former Top 10 competitor Andrea Petkovic. After breaking into the Top 10 in 2011, Petkovic suffered from a variety of injuries that would see her ranking plummet to a low of No. 177 last March. She credits her return to her technical developments over the past two years. The German competitor took part in an dream week in Charleston, where she defeated Sabine Lisicki, Lucie Safarova, Eugenie Bouchard and Jana Cepelova to lift her third title on the tour and her first since 2011.
The only other time these two competitors have clashed on the WTA tour was at this very event four years ago, which Petkovic won 6-7(3) 6-1 7-5.This will likely be another tough three set battle, and considering both competitors have been come into form on clay, it is certainly a tough one to call. Errani is the favourite on paper due to her ranking, but it is very likely that Petkovic could produce another upset to reach the second round.
Prediction: Andrea Petkovic in Three Sets
