Canadian No. 1 Milos Raonic and Gilles Simon will meet in the third round at Roland Garros on Friday afternoon. This is the second time these two competitors will meet on the professional circuit and the first time in over three years. Raonic leads the head-to-head series 1-0.
Eighth seed Milos Raonic reached the third round in Paris with a 7-6(4), 6-4, 6-1 win over “2013 ATP Star of Tomorrow” winner Jiri Vesely. The 20 year old Czech put up a valiant effort early on but ultimately succumbed to a much more experienced competitor.
Raonic his 20 aces, 2 double faults, won 82% of his points on first serve. He also played a well balanced game overall, as he managed 49 winners with only 25 unforced errors to earn the victory in two hours and eight minutes.
World No. 30 Gilles Simon began his week in Paris with a straight sets victory over Ante Pavic, and followed up with another straight sets win over Alejandro Gonzalez. The second round match was a particularly one-sided affair, as Simon even managed a bagel set in between a 6-4, and a 6-2. While the scoreline would suggest that Simon was playing a brilliant contest, which was not the case, as his stats leaned towards the negative. He hit 31 winners to his 33 unforced errors, and 1 ace to his 2 double faults.
Simon is defending fourth round points at this event, as he lost to Roger Federer in the Final 16 last year.
This is the second time these two competitors will meet on the professional circuit and the first time in over three years. Raonic leads the head-to-head series 1-0 with a victory on the clay courts in Estoril. Raonic has been in fine form this season and should manage another strong win to arrive at the final 16 in Paris.
Prediction: Milos Raonic in Four Sets
