An intriguing first round match-up between Australia’s Lleyton Hewitt and Argentina’s Carlos Berlocq is scheduled to take place on Tuesday afternoon. This is the first time these two competitors will meet on the professional tour and should be an entertaining contest.
Hewitt has had a successful resurgence in 2014, as he started his season with a victory over 17-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer to win the Brisbane title. He also earned his 600th victory several months back when he defeated Robin Haase in the opening round of the Miami Masters.
Sadly, Hewitt has only won one of his last five matches on the tour, which include first round loses in Munich and Madrid. He will be looking to break that streak when he faces the surging Argentinian.
After winning his first title last July in Sweden, Carlos Berlocq picked up his second ATP World Tour title last month in Oeiras, where he pulled off a fantastic comeback victory against his higher ranked Czech opponent Tomas Berdych. He has since slowed down slightly on the tour, as he lost in the Rome qualifier to Albert Ramos and followed up with a quarter-final loss to Gilles Simon in Nice.
This is the first time these two competitors will meet on the professional tour and is an intriguing contest for a variety of reasons. Firstly, it will be interesting to see how Berlocq handles the experienced former Grand Slam champion at such an important event. Secondly, will Hewitt be able to snap his losing streak against the Portugal Open winner. While the outcome is almost a toss-up, it will likely be a long grueling affair, which could possibly favour the tenacious Australian.
Prediction: Lleyton Hewitt in Five Sets
