Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Edouard Roger-Vasselin will meet in the opening round of the Mutua Madrid Masters event on Monday afternoon. This marks the fourth time the two competitors will meet on the ATP tour, with Tsonga leading the head-to-head series 4-0.
World No. 13 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is coming off a decent week in Monte Carlo, where he reached the quarter-final round before losing to 17-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer. It was his best performance apart from reaching the final in Marseille back in February. With a 14-8 record this season, Tsonga will be desperately looking to regain his old form and find his way back into the Top 10.
The Frenchman is defending quarter-final points in Madrid this year, after losing to Stanislas Wawrinka in 2013. He will need to reach that stage or better if he is to retain his ranking points.
World No. 45 Edouard Roger-Vasselin began his season in remarkable fashion, reaching the finals in Chennai, before losing to soon-to-be Grand Slam champion Stanislas Wawrinka. Since then, he has reached the third round in Melbourne and the quarter-finals in Montpellier before exiting early to Andy Murray in Rotterdam. Next would be a second round exit in Indian Wells, the third round in Miami, the opening round in Monte Carlo and the second in Barcelona.
This marks the fifth time the two competitors will meet on the ATP tour, with Tsonga leading the head-to-head series 4-0. Tsonga’s victories date back to their first encounter in 2012 and extends to the quarter-final stage in Marseille in 2014. Roger-Vasselin only managed two set in all three encounters combined, which came in the 2013 Queen’s Club tournament on grass. This match will likely be similar to their previous meetings, with Tsonga winning in straight sets to get one step closer to defending his title, but it should be noted that this will be their first ever meeting on clay.
Prediction: Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in Straight Sets
