CitiOpen officials have announced the first group of players confirmed for the 2014 edition of the Washington DC based tournament. The line-up includes John Isner, Richard Gasquet, Lleyton Hewitt, and Sloane Stephens. The Bryan Brothers have also been confirmed in the doubles draw.
Defending champion Juan Martin del Potro will not take part in the event, as he is recovering from recent wrist surgery. The remainder of the field will be revealed in mid-June.
2013 runner-up John Isner will return to the event this season to attempt to win his first title in Washington. The American has reached two finals at the event, losing to Andy Roddick and del Potro respectively. He holds a 19-6 record at the event.
Richard Gasquet has been absent from the tour since losing to Roger Federer in the fourth round in Miami. An ongoing back injury forced him to withdraw from all clay court tournaments so far in April and May, leaving him doubtful for the French Open next week.
With a $1.4 million purse, the Citi Open is one of 11 ATP 500-level events, which places it among the 20 most prestigious tournaments based on prize money and caliber of the field. It is also regarded as a key tuneup for the U.S. Open. The women’s tournament is part of the WTA International Series, which is a rung below the elite tour, and has a purse of $250,000.
The tournament takes place between July 26- August 3 at the Rock Creek Park’s William H.G. FitzGerald Tennis Center.
