France’s Gael Monfils has take a late wild card into the Open de Nice Côte d’Azur next week in Nice, according to tournament officials.
The 2013 runner-up will take part in the event for a fourth time, and will use it as a tune-up for the French Open later in May.
The world No. 24 began his season with two losses to Rafael Nadal, first in the finals in Doha, then in the third round of the Australian Open. He also joined the French Davis Cup team in their 5-0 victory against Australia in January. Following a relatively strong month of March, where he lost in the third round at Indian Wells and the second round in Miami, Monfils played the role of the French saviour, as he helped his team recover from a 0-2 deficit against the depleted German team.
He is 17-7 so far this season, following a recent semi-final run in Bucharest, where he was forced to retire against Grigor Dimitrov.
The Open de Nice Côte d’Azur begins Sunday afternoon.
