Budding Canadian talent Eugenie Bouchard will meet Francesca Schiavone in the opening round of the Internazionali BNL d’Italia on Monday afternoon. It is the first time these two competitors will clash on the WTA tour, and will likely be a contest that is dominated by the powerful Bouchard.
Canadian No. 1 Eugenie Bouchard was faced with a tough opening round clash with Agnieszka Radwanska, which she lost upset in the quarter-final round of the Portugal Open last week, when she lost to world No. 29 Svetlana Kuznetsova. The world No. 18 is 20-9 so far this season, and has already reached two semi-finals, including the Australian Open and Charelston. Her loss to Kuznetsova was her sixth loss this season to a player ranked below her in the rankings, which is a sign of her inconsistency during this growth period. When the Canadian is on form, she is capable of producing magnificent tennis, but is also capable of losing her focus and increasing her unforced errors.
World No. 61 Francesca Schiavone is coming off a second round loss to fellow Italian Sara Errani last week in Madrid. Prior to that she had defeated Elena Vesnina, which snapped a two match losing streak dating back to the Katowice Open in April. Schiavone has not gotten past the opening round in Rome since 2011, where she reached the quarter-final stage before losing to Samantha Stosur. Considering she has dropped 19 spots in the world rankings since the start of the season, the Italian will be desperately searching for a big win this week on home soil.
This marks the first time that Bouchard and Schiavone will cross paths on the professional circuit. Based off their respective rankings and seasons so far, the Canadian will be a heavy favourite heading into the contest.
Prediction: Eugenie Bouchard in Straight Sets
