A compelling second round match-up is scheduled to take place on Tuesday afternoon as Canadian No. 1 Eugenie Bouchard and Anastasia Rodionova will meet for a spot in the third round of the Nurnberg Versicherungsup. This marks the first time these two competitors will meet on the professional tour.
After a few disappointing weeks on the tour, that included first round losses in Madrid and Rome, world No. 19 Eugenie Bouchard won her first contest in the Nurnberg Cup on Monday afternoon. She stormed past Barbora Zahlavova Strycova 6-0, 6-3 to set up the second round clash with Rodionova.
“I had a few tough weeks,” she explained. “But at the same time, my tennis wasn’t at the level I want it to be. I feel like I’m playing well, but I just didn’t perform in those matches.
“I had a good week of practice here and I feel like I’m a bit more active, moving better and hitting the ball a bit more freely now. It’s my last chance for preparation ahead of the French Open so I want to do as well as I can.”
Rodionova dug deep on Monday to recover from a second set blunder to win her opening round match 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. The world No. 217 had not won a WTA main draw match since the start of the season, making this a big achievement for her.
While Bouchard is almost 200 places ahead of Rodionova in the rankings, the Australian’s aggressive style makes her a tough match-up for ‘Genie.’ The Canadian will need to play beyond her usual game to ensure the victory tomorrow.
Prediction: Eugenie Bouchard in Three Sets
