The first semi final at the prestigious Internazionali BNL Italia tournament saw 10th seed home favourite, Sara Errani, face off against 6th seeded Jelena Jankovic. The diminutive Italian had straight sets wins all the way to the quarters, where she took out 2nd seeded Na Li 6-3 4-6 6-2 in her first ever win over a top three player.
Jankovic had a first round bye, followed by a win in the second round when Svetlana Kuznetsova had to retire with the Serb leading 6-2 4-0. She then had straight sets wins over 13th seeded Flavia Panetta and 3rd seeded Aga Radwanska to reach the semis. Errani got the breaks to lead 5-2 with the Serb serving to stay in the first set – and she held to trail 3-5, but the Italian served out to love for the set at 6-0 in 49 minutes.
The Serb started the second set much more aggressively after having had her brother and coach, Marco, on court and games went with serve until she broke in the 3th game and then held to lead 4-1. Errani broke back in the 7th game and went on a run of four games to lead 5-4 with her serve to seal the set, but Jankovic broke to level at 5-5. The determined Italian broke back and served for the set for the second time and this time made no mistake to take the set 7-5 to the delight of the partisan Italian fans.
