One of the most interesting first round matches scheduled to take place at the Mutua Madrid Open is the sizzling encounter between Dominika Cibulkova and Samantha Stosur. The Australian leads the head-to-head series 3-0, and will be looking to remain undefeated against the surging Slovak. Check out the Cibulkova vs Stosur Head to Head matches.
World No. 10 Dominika Cibulkova has had a breakthrough season in 2014, as she reached first Grand Slam final at the Australian Open, won her fourth WTA title at Acapulco, reached the quarter-final at Indian Wells and the semi-finals in Miami, which sent her to a career-high of world No. 10. She later pulled out of Stuttgart because of an Achilles injury, and was replaced by German lucky loser Mona Barthel.
Cibulkova is one of the favourites for this tournament, as she is the highest ranked member of her quarter apart from Maria Sharapova, whom she has defeated at this very event in 2011.
Stosur began her season in Hobart, where she reached the semi-finals before losing to Klara Zakopalova. She would go on to reach the third round of the Australian open, the second round in Doha and a surprising opening round loss to Annika Beck in Dubai. She would follow up with third round losses at both Indian Wells and Miami.
While she was expected to pick up the pace in the clay court portion of the season, Stosur has had a less than stellar start on the red dirt, as she lost in the third round in Charleston to Lucie Safarova, and then a surprising opener to Timea Bacsinszky in Portugal. It will be interesting to see if she will regain focus in time to produce an upset against Cibulkova.
This marks the fourth time these two competitors will meet on the professional tour, with Stosur leading the series with an undefeated record of 3-0. While this may be the case, Stosur’s last win took place in 2012, and Cibulkova is a vastly different competitor now. If she has managed to recover from her Achilles injury, she should manage her first victory over the top Australian.
Prediction: Dominika Cibulkova in Three Sets
