Camila Giorgi

One of the most intriguing first round match-ups is scheduled to take place on Tuesday afternoon at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia, as Slovak star Dominika Cibulkova and Italy’s Camila Giorgi will clash for the first time for a spot in the second round of the tournament. Both competitors have produced some some remarkable tennis in their own right and it will be interesting to see who comes out on top in this encounter.

World No. 10 Dominika Cibulkova has had a breakthrough season in 2014, as she reached first Grand Slam final at the Australian Open, won her fourth WTA title at Acapulco, reached the quarter-final at Indian Wells and the semi-finals in Miami, which sent her to a career-high of world No. 10. She later pulled out of Stuttgart because of an Achilles injury, and was replaced by German lucky loser Mona Barthel. Last week, Cibulkova was upset in Madrid by Australia’s Samantha Stosur and she will be looking to rebound with a strong showing in Rome.

World No. 54 Camila Giorgi has proven that she is a true talent when she defeated Maria Sharapova at Indian Wells before losing to the eventual champion Flavia Pennetta in the fourth round.  She would later use that momentum to reach the final in Katowice, and defeated the likes of Roberta Vinci and Carla Suarez Navarro before losing to Alize Cornet.

This marks the first time these two competitors on the professional tour, and is arguably one of the tougher matches to offer a accurate prediction. While Giorgi has shown flashes of brilliance throughout the past couple of years, she is notoriously inconsistent, which is why Cibukova is the favourite ahead of the contest. At the same time, Dominika is coming off a first round loss in Madrid and has not been in top form since Miami. She is yet to find her form on clay and that could be her downfall on Tuesday.

Prediction: Dominika Cibulkova in Three Sets
