An intriguing quarter-final match-up is scheduled to take place between Angelique Kerber and Karolina Pliskova. This marks the third time these two competitors will meet on the professional tour, with Kerber leading the head-to-head series 2-0.
World No. 9 Angelique Kerber reached the quarter-finals of the Nuremberg Cup by defeating German compatriot Anna-Lena Friedsam 6-2, 7-6 (0) on Wednesday. Prior to that, she had beaten Erakovic 6-4, 6-2. She is next slotted to face Czech Republic’s Karolina Pliskova for a spot in the semi-final.
In March, Kerber lost her opening match in Dubai to Torro-Flor, but rebounded nicely to reach the semi-finals in Miami, where she lost to the eventual champion Serena Williams. Since then, she helped the German team defeat Australian in the Fed Cup week 2, and then dropped her opener to Carla Suarez Navarro in Stuttgart. She would follow up with two more opening round losses in Madrid and Rome.
World No. 64 Karolina Pliskova reached the quarter-final in Nurnberg with a 6-3, 6-4 upset win over Fifth seed Yvonne Meusburger and followed up with a 7-6(5), 6-3 victory over rising Belgian Alison Van Uytvanck.
The Czech native has had a relatively strong season so facr, as reached the final in Pattaya City (losing to Ekaterina Makarova), the third round in Indian Wells (losing to Li Na), the quarterfinals in Monterrey (losing to Caroline Wozniacki) and the semifinals in Kuala Lumpur (losing to Dominika Cibulkova) – but success has been harder to come by on clay. In her two events on red clay, Pliskova successfully qualified into Madrid but lost to Sabine Lisicki in three sets in the first round and, dropping down to ITF level to play in Prague, reached the quarterfinals before losing to Heather Watson.
This marks the thirs time these two competitors will meet on the professional circuit, and will likely end with a similar result as their prior two encounters. While Kerber has been inconsistent on clay so far this season, she appears to have found her form in Nurnberg and will move forward to the semi-final.
Prediction: Angelique Kerber in Three Sets
