British No. 1 Andy Murray played his first match at Roland Garros since 2012 on Tuesday afternoon and successfully battled into the second round where he will now face “Mad Dog” Marinko Matosevic. This is the second time these two competitors will meet on the professional tour, with Murray leading the series with a win during his historic title run last year at the Wimbledon Championships. Check out the Murray vs Matosevic Head to Head.

Seventh seed Andy Murray began his campaign at the French Open with a 6-1, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 win against Andrey Golubev. It was a surprisingly entertaining match-up and one that saw an array of spectacular shotmaking from both athletes – much to the delight of the crowd in attendance.

“It was tricky conditions out there, so it wasn’t easy to play great tennis or very exciting tennis, so you just had to just play sort of solid, high percentage game,” said Murray. “That was enough today. But I was definitely excited to be back here playing here.”

Murray’s second round match-up is against Australia’s Marinko Matosevic, who snapped a 12 match losing streak in Grand Slam matches to pick up his first ever win at a major. The Australian defeated Dustin Brown 7-6(5), 6-4, 6-7(1), 7-5.

“I got to 39 in the [Emirates ATP Rankings], so I’m like, ‘I got to do it. I’m better than this,’” added Matosevic, the current World No. 66. “With the early losses, like once it got to five, six, then two years, eight, then 12, three years, it’s tough.

“I always knew I was a better player than my Grand Slam results. I’m happy I could get the win today.”

This is just the second time these two competitors will cross paths on the professional tour, and it is also the second time in a Grand Slam event. Matosevic was Murray’s first opponent last year in his historic campaign to become the first british male singles player to win the Wimbledon title in 77 years.

Prediction: Andy Murray in Straight Sets
