Ana Ivanovic forehand Ana Ivanovic vs Lucie Safarova Preview – French Open 2014 Round 3

With the top three female seed eliminated from the 2014 French Open, the draw has opened up for the likes of 11th seed Ana Ivanovic, who reached the third round in Paris and will face Lucie Safarova for a spot in the final 16. The two athletes have met on six previous occasions, with Safarova leading the series 4-2, having reeled off the last four consecutive matches dating back to 2009. Check out the Ivanovic vs Safarova Head to Head.

Serbian No. 2 Ana Ivanovic faced a tough opening set against Svitolina, as she dropped serve early on before facing a rollercoaster ride en route to snatching the opener 7-5. The second set against the No. 1 ranked teenager was an easier affair, as Ivanovic found her form to take a 3-0 lead before finishing it off 6-2. The difference in the match was in Ivanovic’s stats, as she maintained impressive winners to unforced errors ratio at 28-21.

“The first set was very tight,” Ivanovic said. “I was really happy to hold my nerves in the end of that set and then sort of pick up my intensity and rhythm in the second. She’s a very dangerous opponent. I think she has a good future in front of her. She still needs to get more consistent, but her strokes are very powerful and she has a very dangerous game.”

Ivanovic’s next opponent is world No. 24 Lucie Safarova, who battled past Casey Dellacqua to reach the third round of the French Open. This marks the first time Safarova reaches the third round in Paris since 2007 and she will be looking to match her career-best showing at this tournament by securing entry into the fourth round. She has defeated Ivanovic in their last four consecutive encounters, which should certainly give her the confidence necessary on Saturday afternoon.

“It’s going to be a tough match-up,” Ivanovic said about Safarova. “She has been playing really well lately. The last few times I actually lost, so I will try to get revenge and look forward to the challenge. I have tomorrow to get ready for it, and hopefully it will be a good one.”

Prediction: Ana Ivanovic in Three Sets

I'd agree with this. I would love to see Lucie finally pull out a big win. On five occasions this year, she has taken a set off a top ten player. I know Ana isn't a top ten player right now, but this would be a huge scalp for Safarova if she were to pull it off. I have a horrible feeling it could be like Lucie's match with Li Na at the Aus Open.
