A match-up between Ana Ivanovic and Karin Knapp is scheduled to take place in the opening round of the Internazionali BNL d’Italia on Monday afternoon. This is the first time these two competitors will cross paths on the WTA tour.
World No. Ana Ivanovic has had a sort of resurgence in 2014, as the 2008 French Open champion won a title in Auckland before reaching the quarter-final at the Australian Open, the fourth round in Miami, as well as a second title last week in Monterrey, where she defeated Jovana Jaksic in the final. She would carry that momentum forth into her Stuttgart campaign, where she would defeat Lisicki, Kuznetsova and Jankovic en route to the final. While she held a significant lead in her match-up against Sharapova, she would ultimately surrender the match in three sets to give the Russian her third title at that tournament.
Ivanovic is coming off a quarter-final loss to eventual runner-up Simona Halep at the Mutua Madrid Open, but had eased through her earlier matches with considerable ease, which will give her confidence heading into Rome.
Former world No. 35 Karin Knapp is coming off a first round loss to Bojana Jovanovski in Madrid, who would then go on to lose to Ivanovic in the second round. She is currently riding a seven match losing streak and has not won a match since the opening round of the Dubai Open in February. Her poor showings have dropped her to No. 51 in the world rankings, but she will be looking to produce an unlikely upset against the Serbian No. 2.
This is the first time these two competitors will meet on the professional tour, with Ivanovic heavily favoured to cruise into the second round of the competition.
Prediction: Ana Ivanovic in Straight Sets
