A look at the Ivanovic vs Jovanovski second round Madrid Open match:
Serbian No. 2 Ana Ivanovic rebounded tremendously from her lose to Sharapova in the Stuttgart final, by dominating her opening round encounter against Madison Keys to earn the 6-1, 7-6(4) victory. The first set lasted a mere 22 minutes, while the second one was a much tighter affair, as Ana needed to recover from 1-3 down in the tiebreaker.
“It was a really good start, despite the fact that I didn’t know much about her coming into the match,” Ivanovic said. “The conditions here are a lot faster than the last few weeks and the ball flies a lot more. In the second set it was really close. I got an early break but she did well to break back. I was very pleased to play a good tie-break.
The Serb has already won two titles so far this season, and is coming off a runner-up finish in Stuttgart, which marked her best WTA Premier event finish since Indian Wells in 2009. She is looking to improve upon that this week in Madrid.
“These tournaments are smaller draws. You have tough competition from the first round on. You have to make the best out of it. She’s a young player we’ll see a lot from in the future. She has a very powerful game. I’m very happy to get through.
“I’ve been playing lots of Serbians lately. Actually I’ve never played Bojana before. It’s going to be a lot different than today’s match. Bojana gets a lot of balls back. I still have to focus on my game and talk to my coach about some tactics. Hopefully, it will be another good one.”
World No. 40 Bjoana Jovanovski dominated her match-up against Karin Knapp in the opening round in Madrid, and ended with a 6-1, 6-1 victory to set up the second round encounter with fellow Serb Ivanovic.
This marks the first time these two competitors will clash on the professional tour, which certainly adds intrigue to the contest. Ivanovic will have the advantage due to experience and ranking, but it will be interesting to see if the younger Serb is capable of producing a top notch performance.
Prediction: Ana Ivanovic in Three Sets
