The 2014 French Open main draw match-up will begin on Sunday afternoon, with the first match-up on Court Philippe Chatrier taking place between Polish No 1 Agnieszka Radwanska and China’s Shuai Zhang. This is just the second time these two will meet on the professional tour, with Radwanska leading the head to head series 1-0 with a victory back in 2012.
World No. 3 Agnieszka Radwanska is coming off a semi-final showing in Madrid and a third round loss to Jelena Jankovic in Rome, which could arguably hinder her momentum heading into Roland Garros. She is defending quarter-final points at the event, where she lost to Sara Errani last season.
Overall, it has been a strong season for Radwanska, as she reached the semi-final at the Australian Open and the final at Indian Wells, which boosted her ranking to its current high. While she did lose to Alize Cornet in the Katowice semi-final, she rebounded with a strong 2-0 weekend for her Fed Cup team, but would have her momentum halted in the quarter-final round of Stuttgart, when she lost to eventual champion Maria Sharapova. She would lose to Sharapova a second time at the Mutua Madrid Open semi-finals, where she barely managed five games against the Russian.
World No. 34 Shuai Zhang is coming off a strong showing in the Internazionali BNL d’italia, where she reached the quarter-final round before losing to Serena Williams. Prior to that she had defeated Lauren Davis. Petra Kvitova and Christina McHale en route to the quarter-final round. She will be looking to follow up with another strong showing in Paris, but has been drawn a tough match-up against crafty veteran and world No. 3 Radwanska.
This marks the second time these two competitors will meet on the professional tour, with Aga leading the head-to-head series 1-0. Their only other meeting took place two years ago Beijing. This is the first time they will meet on the red dirt surface.
Prediction: Agnieszka Radwanska in Straight Sets
