A fantastic quarter-final bout is scheduled to take place between world No. 3 Agnieszka Radwanska and top Serb Jelena Jankovic at the BNP Paribas Open on Wednesday. This marks the sixth time these two competitors will meet on the WTA Tour, with the Radwanska vs Jankovic Head to Head standing at 4-1.
The Polish No. 1 faced a surprisingly stern test on Thursday afternoon as she faced local favourite Francesca Schiavone, who was riding a hot streak with big wins over Eugenie Bouchard and Garbine Muguruza. The Italian looked to attack from the baseline once more as she did against her previous two opponents, but was unable to decipher the Radwanska puzzle. Aga was simply too craft and managed to end the contest 6-4, 6-1. Schiavone had some bright moments, which electrified the crowd in attendance, including winning back a break of serve in the opening set.
Radwanska put on a standard performance as is typical of her. She hit 21 winners and less unforced errors with 16. That was the deciding factor, as her opponent hit 13 more unforced errors than she did.
Later in the day, Jelena Jankovic toppled another Italian in Flavia Pennetta to reach the quarter-final stage of the tournament. It was a rollercoaster set in the opening frames, as Jankovic managed 4/5 breaks but only saved 1/3 herself. Following a grueling seventh game, Jankovic broke ahead and finally closed out the set 6-3 for the victory.
This marks the seventh time these two will meet on the WTA tour, with Radwanska leading the series 4-1. She has won their last five consecutive matches dating back to 2011. They last met was at Indian Wells this year, where Radwanska clinched the victory 7-5 2-6 6-4. She has also managed to bagel Jankovic in two of the five matches they have played – adding to her dominance in the rivalry.
Prediction: Agnieszka Radwanska in Three Sets
