The U.S Fed Cup team has had a difficult few months without their main stars, as they were forced to face the Italian team with inexperienced competitors Christina McHale, Alison Riske, Madison Keys and Lauren Davis. Even though the loss set them to the Fed Cup play-offs, it appears they are unlikely to see their either of the Williams sisters or Sloane Stephens when the U.S team hosts France in 10 days time.
World No. 1 Serena Williams lost in the opening round in Charleston last week, a tournament she won over the past couple of years. Following the match, Williams revealed that she would be taking some time away from tennis to regroup and rest her body.
“I’m really just dead. I need some weeks off where I don’t think about tennis and kind of regroup,” Williams said after the match. “I’ve had a long couple of years, and I’m really a little fatigued.”
Following that decision, Madison Keys explained in her post-match interview in Charleston that the U.S Fed Cup team was left guessing after Serena’s cryptic words.
“After Serena saying she needs a month and a half off, we’re all kind of like, ‘Oh, okay. Fed Cup is in two weeks. So maybe you won’t be there,’” Keys explained. “So we’re kind of waiting to see what she says.”
Venus Williams also confirmed in Charleston that she will not be taking part in the Fed Cup tie.
Back in February, Italy took an unblemished 3-0 lead to secure the tie before Lauren Davis and Madison Keys won a doubles match against Nastassja Burnett and Alice Matteucci for a final 3-1 score for Italy.
The USA-France Play-off tie takes place between April 19-20.
