A second round match-up between Tomas Berdych and Somdev Devvarman is scheduled to take place on Thursday afternoon at the Portugal Open. The top-seeded Berdych already holds a win over the top ranked Indian, which took place last year in the Chennai Open. The head-to-head series stands at 1-0 for Berdych.
World No. 6 Tomas Berdych captured his first title in 16 months at Rotterdam bringing his overall record in ATP World Tour finals to 9-11. Following his success in the Netherlands, Berdych would see his his career-best 11-match winning streak end with a tight three-set loss to Roger Federer in Dubai. While he lost in the second round at Indian Wells, he reached the semi-finals in Miami but was forced to withdraw ahead of his scheduled contest versus Nadal due to gastroenteritis. He would then go on to lose to Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in the second round in Monte Carlo.
- This is the eighth time in Berdych’s career he is the top seed in an ATP World Tour tournament and the first since 2013 Bangkok Open.
- His only other appearance at the Portugal Open was in 2005, where he lost in the opening round of the tournament.
World No. 102 Somdev Devvarman defeated Matthew Ebden 6-2, 6-3 in one hour and 13 minutes on Tuesday afternoon. His win snapped a five-match ATP World Tour losing streak, dating back to his upset win over Juan Martin del Potro when the Argentine was forced to retire in Dubai. With the relief of picking up his first ATP win in 3 months, Somedev will be looking to follow up with another Top 10 upset victory.
This marks the second time these two competitors meet on the professional tour, with Berdych leading the head-to-head series 1-0. HIs victory took place on hard court last season in Chennai. Barring any surprising incidents, Berdych should dominate this encounter en route to the quarter-final round in Oeiras.
