A third round match-up between two of the top German competitors in Sabine Lisicki and Andrea Petkovic is scheduled to take place at the Family Circle Cup on Thursday afternoon. This marks the first time these two competitors will meet on the WTA tour.
Fourth seed Sabine Lisicki rallied from 0-2 down in the deciding set to edge Vania King, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3. The German put on a strong showing in the match, as she managed 12 aces overall. Lisciki admit after the match that it took her a while to adjust to the green clay.
“Usually I’m at home for at least five or six days to prepare to go from hardcourt to clay, and this time I only had two days to prepare, so it was tough in the beginning,” Lisicki said. “But the longer the match went on, the better I started to time the ball and I was making less unforced errors out there.
“It was up and down a bit, but I think I was getting better throughout the match today.”
While she may have suffered a second round exit last week in Miami, she produced one of the biggest surprises at the event, when she won the doubles title alongside former world No. 1 Martina Hingis.
Following her second round exit from Miami, world No. 40 Andrea Petkovic arrived in Charleston, where she rallied for a three set victory over Tsurenko in the opening round, and thrashed Spain’s Dominguez Lino 6-0. 6-0 in the second round to set up her clash with her fellow German native in Lisicki.
This marks the first time these two competitors will meet on the professional tour, and will likely be an entertaining contest. Both Petkovic and Lisicki have had turbulent starts to their respective season, yet each is capable of earning the victory tomorrow afternoon in Charleston. The odds favour the more consistent Lisicki, yet whether she prove the oddsmakers correct is a different matter entirely.
