An intriguing match-up between 17-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer and 49th Lukas Rosol takes place in the third round of the Monte Carlo Masters. It is the second time the two athletes meet on the professional tour, and is also the second time this season, after Federer defeated Rosol at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships en route to his first title of the season. The head-to-head series stands at 1-0 for Federer. Check out the Federer vs Rosol H2H matches.

The former 3-time runner-up in Monte Carlo stormed into the third round, picking up a surprisingly quick victory over Czech No. 2 Radek Stepanek. The Swiss dropped a mere three games during the match, and closed it out 6-2, 6-1 to set up a third round encounter with Lukas Rosol. He hit 14 winners and secured four break points to win the match in 52 minutes.

Even Federer, who took part in a gruelling three-set battle against Stepanek in Dubai, admit that it was a surprising result to the contest.

“I’m a bit surprised how well it went,” said Federer. “Then again, it’s hard to serve through the opponent. I was able to get a lot of returns back into play. On clay, when you have the upper hand from the baseline, it’s kind of hard to get out of it. I think that’s kind of how it was for Radek today. I had a good start to both sets, then I was solid on my own service games. The next thing you know, you’re in the lead and you can hit freely. It was clearly a good match to start my clay-court campaign.”

Following his victory over Donskoy in the opening round, world No. 47 Lukas Rosol secured another straight sets win over France’s Michael Llorda to set up the third round encounter with Roger Federer. This is the first time Rosol has qualified for the Monte Carlo Masters and will be looking to secure three consecutive wins on the ATP World Tour for the first time this season.

This marks the second time these two competitors will meet on the professional tour, with Federer earning the first victory earlier this season with a 6-2, 6-2 scoreline in Dubai. Apart from an early encounter with Rafael Nadal, Federer is the highest ranked opponent that Rosol has encountered in 2014, which should place the Swiss No. 2 as a hefty favourite during the match. While clay has never been Federer’s prefered surface, he has seemingly transitioned successfully, as his opening match against Stepanek proved so. This should be another quick contest.

Prediction: Roger Federer in Straight Sets
