Bouchard raced through the first set 6-1 but Petkovic fought back in the second set with a double break to take it 6-3. The Canadian broke in the 5th game of the decider but Petkovic levelled at 4-4. Petkovic then got another break take the set 7-5.
Serena Williams had a first round bye but was beaten 6-4 6-4 by 78th ranked Jana Cepelova in the second round, thus opening up the draw for the 20 year old Slovakian. She went on to take out 13th seed Elena Vesnina and then 12th seeded Daniela Hantuchova in the quarters, to make her first ever tour semi. She faced off against the 140th ranked qualifier from Switzerland, Belinda Bencic, who was also playing her first WTA semi. Her route was via two straight sets wins over 10th seeded Maria Kirilenko and Marina Erakovic, followed by a three set battle with Elina Svitolina before defeating 3rd seed Sara Errani in three. In a hard fought match, the Slovak took the first set 6-4, but the Swiss teenager took a 5-1 lead in the second before Cepelova drew level at 5-5. Bencic held and broke for a 7-5 set. The decider was a nail biter which went to a breaker, which Cepelova took 9-7 after two hours and thirty three minutes on court.
