Defending champion Maria Sharapova and Italian No. 1 Sara Errani will meet for a fifth time on the WTA tour in the semi-final round in Stuttgart. Errani will be chasing her first ever victory over Sharapova, who has won their last four encounters in straight sets, including a clay court victory in the 2012 French Open final. Check out the Sharapova vs Errani Head to Head.
World No. 9 Maria Sharapova secured her place in the WTA Top 10 rankings with a stunning straight sets victory over top seed and world No. 3 Agnieszka Radwanska. Sharapova earned the 6-4, 6-3 win to book her place in the semifinals of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix and get one step closer to defending her first title this season.
“She likes moving her opponents around the court and she does that extremely well when she has time. You know, I don’t want to find myself running forwards and backwards. I need to look for the opportunities when I have short ball and take advantage of that and not let her get back into the point, which she does so often. That’s something that I did really well.
“Obviously it was a very difficult end and she played extremely well on some of those match points. I was happy that I stayed aggressive and I was able to win the last one. It was a really big point obviously. So, yeah it’s a big win for me, probably the biggest since my injury.”
Having now defeated the tournament’s top seed, it would appear that the path is clear for the former world No. 1 to secure the title, yet her upcoming match-up is against a savvy clay court specialist in Sara Errani, who is also coming off a big win against Spain’s Carla Suarez-Navarro.
This marks the fifth time these two competitors will meet on the WTA tour, with Sharapova holing an undefeated 4-0 record against her Italian counterpart. Errani will be looking to avenge her last clay court loss to Sharapova, which took place in the French Open final almost two years back. Considering she is yet to truly find her form this season, it is unlikely she will best Sharapova on this occasion.
Prediction: Maria Sharapova in Straight Sets
