Canadian No. 1 Eugenie Bouchard will begin her week in Charleston with a second round match-up against Russia’s Alla Kudryavtseva. This marks the first time these two competitors will meet on the professional tour, yet will likely be an entertaining match-up for the fans in attendance.
World No. 20 Eugenie Bouchard began her 2014 season in remarkable fashion, yet has been unable to sustain the momentum since then. The rising star managed to reach the fourth round at Indian Wells before losing to world No. 5 Simona Halep, yet exited the Sony Open in her opening match against world No. 42 Elina Svitolina. The recent skid dropped her down to 20th in the WTA rankings and she will be looking to rebound successfully this week in Charleston, where she reached the quarter-final last year before losing Serbian No. 1 Jelena Jankovic.
World No. 117 Alla Kudryavtseva is through to the second round of a WTA event for the first time since the Pattaya City Open in January. Since then, she has failed to qualify for four out the five events, with Charleston being the only successful venture so far. She began her week at the Family Circle Cup with a 6-3, 7-5 victory over America’s Christina McHale.
This marks the first time these two competitors will meet on the professional tour, and will be a contest that will likely favour the budding star Eugenie Bouchard. Apart from Angelique Kerber, Bouchard is the highest ranked opponent Kudryavtseva will have faced so far this season, which does not bode well for her chances tomorrow afternoon. The Canadian is an aggressive competitor and developing at a frantic pace, which should be on display tomorrow afternoon if the Canadian is on form.
Prediction: Eugenie Bouchard in Straight Sets
