Former world No. 1 Venus Williams will look to continue her fantastic season on the tour, as she arrives this week in Charleston, South Carolina for Family Circle Cup. The American will face Barbora Zahlavova Strycova in the opening round at the event, which will mark their second meeting on the professional circuit. Williams leads the head-to-head series 1-0.
The 2004 Charleston champion Venus Williams is partaking in a fantastic season on the WTA tour. She began 2014 by reaching the finals in Auckland, before succumbing to former world No. 1 Ana Ivanovic. While she would exit early in both Melbourne and Doha, she would rebound magnificently to win her third title in Dubai, extending her undefeated streak at that event to 15-0. She is coming off a fourth round exit in Miami, where she lost to eventual semi-finalist Dominika Cibulkova.
While the 2014 Family Circle Cup will feature many of the WTA’s top competitors, Venus is looking forward to a potential deep run in the draw, starting with her opening round match-up against Strycova.
“I love traveling to Charleston and playing in a stadium where the fans always get behind me,” said V. Williams. “The Family Circle Cup has come to have a special place in my heart, and a tournament I always look forward to.”
World No. 64 Barbora Zahlavova Strycova is coming off a third round exit to Elina Svitolina after upsetting 13th seed Roberta Vinci in the second round. It was her best performance at an event since the season-opening event in Shenzhen, where she reached the quarter-finals. She holds an 11-9 record going into her first round match-up against Venus Williams.
This marks the second time these two competitors will meet on the professional tour, with Venus leading the series with one victory back in 2009. It was a dominant display from the American, who eventually stormed through the match 6-0, 6-3 to reach the Mexican Open final. Considering their first meeting also took place on clay, Williams will likely show similar determination and aggression this time around, and will dispatch of her Czech opponent in straight sets.
Prediction: Venus Williams in Straight Sets
