An intriguing first time encounter is scheduled to take place between budding talent Dominic Thiem and Spain’s Tommy Robredo in the second round of the Sony Open. This marks the first time they will meet on the ATP tour and will likely be an entertaining battle.
Dominic Thiem defeated both Rhyne Williams and Peter Polansky to reach the main draw of the Miami Masters on Tuesday afternoon and followed it up with a Thursday victory over Lukas Rosol to set up the second round clash with Robredo. The 20-year-old has now successfully qualified for the event on five of six occasions and will be looking for a career best performance in 2014. He has already risen from No. 139 to No. 86 in the Emirates ATP Rankings and will be looking to continue that upward climb with a strong showing against Robredo.
Robredo has enjoyed a relatively strong start to his 2014 season, as he has returned to the ATP Top 20, where he currently sits at No. 17. He is 9-5 so far this season and will be playing his first contest in Miami tomorrow afternoon against Thiem. He is coming off a third round exit at the BNP Paribas Open and will be after a better performance this upcoming fortnight.
This will be the first time these two competitors will meet on the professional tour. It will likely be an entertaining and competitive encounter, filled with high-quality shot-making, particularly from Thiem, who has proven to be a future star in the making with his impressive wins this season. If he continues to play with his current form, he could potentially upset the Spaniard in three sets.
Prediction: Dominic Thiem in Three Sets
