World No. 3 Stanislas Wawrinka is through to the third round of the Sony Open, where he will encounter Edouard Roger-Vasselin for the fourth time on the professional circuit, and the second time this year. The Swiss No. 1 leads the head-to-head series 2-1.
Following his surprise upset in the fourth round at Indian Wells, Stanislas Wawrinka rebounded with a three-set win over Spain’s Gimeno-Traver to begin his campaign in Miami. The Swiss No. 1 stormed through the opening set without dropping a single game, yet lost focus in the second set to allow the Spaniard to force a decider. He would quickly recover to close out the match 6-0, 3-6, 6-3. The win puts him at 14-1 so far this season, and sets up a third round encounter with France’s Edouard Roger-Vasselin, whom he has already encountered once at the start of the season.
“I was negative in the second set, a little bit stupidly, but then I’m really happy the way I started the third set,” Wawrinka said. “First one here, it’s never easy. The conditions were really slow today, really humid. You need to get through.”
World No.43 Edouard Roger-Vasselin began his season in perfect fashion, reaching the finals in Chennai, before losing to his upcoming opponent Stanislas Wawrinka. Since then, the Frenchman has not advanced past the quarter-final of any tournament he has partaken in, exiting in the opening round in Acapulco, as well as the second round at Indian Wells. He has since raised the intensity on court, as he began his week in Miami with a victory over Igor Sijsling before upsetting Marin Cilic in straight sets in his following match.
Wawrinka and Roger-Vasselin met in the finals in Chennai earlier this year – a match which the Swiss won 7-5, 6-2. Wawrinka’s only other victory over the Frenchman came at the same tournament two years prior, while Roger-Vaseelin’s win is sandwiched in between those two in Basel. It will be interesting to see if Wawrinka, who has not been playing his best tennis since the Australian Open, is capable of another quick victory over the world No. 43.
Prediction: Stanislas Wawrinka in Three Sets
