World No. 3 Stanislas Wawrinka is scheduled to begin his Sony Open campaign on Saturday afternoon against Spain’s Daniel Gimeno-Traver. Wawrinka leads the head-to-head series 2-0, with both wins coming last year on clay courts.
Swiss No. 1 Stanislas Wawrinka broke through the barrier placed by the Top 4 on the tour, when he managed to win his maiden Grand Slam title after defeating (a wounded) Nadal in the final. Since then, he has been unable to consolidate the victory with another title win, as he suffered his first loss of the season at last week’s Indian Wells event, when he lost to Kevin Anderson in the fourth round. He currently holds a 13-1 record on the tour this season and will be looking to extend that this week in Miami.
Following a slow start in his opening round match-up against Khachanov, Spain’s Daniel Gimeno-Traver managed a three set victory to secure entry into the second round. He arrived at Miami this week coming off first round exits to Santiago Giraldo and Rafael Nadal at Indian Wells and the Rio Open respectively. Prior to that, he featured his strongest performances of the season, where the world No. 99 reached the quarter-finals in Vina del Mar, losing to Leonardo Mayer, then followed up with a second round loss to Nicholas Almagro in the second round in Buenos Aires. Although he had risen to No. 84, he has since dropped back down to No. 99 following his first round losses. He has once again been tasked with a tough match-up, as he faces Stanislas Wawrinka in the second round.
This marks the third time these two competitors will meet on the professional tour, with Wawrinka leading the head-to-head series 2-0, with both wins coming last year on clay courts. Gimeno-Traver has never won a set against the Swiss star, and while this will be their first meeting on hard court, it is unlikely he will manage it this time around.
Prediction: Stanislas Wawrinka in Straight Sets
