Third seed Stanislas Wawrinka is through to the third round of the BNP Paribas Open, where he will will meet world No. 32 Andreas Seppi for an eleventh time on the ATP Tour. The Wawrinka vs Seppi head-to-head stands at 7-3 and will be looking to extend that streak and remain undefeated in 2014.
In his first professional contest since winning the Australian Open, Stanislas Wawrinka made a triumphant return to the ATP World Tour, defeating the big-serving Ivo Karlovic 6-3, 7-5 to reach the third round of the BNP Paribas Open. Wawrinka did not face a break point and countered the Croat’s nine aces with eight of his own to earn the straight sets victory in 63 minutes. He remains at a perfect 12-0 so far this season – the only player in the Top 10 with a undefeated record in 2014.
“I was a little bit scared the way I was going to come back, the way I was going to play, but after five, six days on the practice court with Magnus, I was feeling really good,” said Wawrinka. “I’m really happy with my level. I really think I’m playing great tennis.”
Italy’s Andreas Seppi rallied for a 4-6, 7-6(3), 6-3 win over local favourite Sam Querrey, saving two match points in the process. The 29th seed will now be searching for his first victory over the Swiss No, 1 since the Rome Masters in 2012.
This marks the eleventh time these two competitors will meet on the professional tour, with Wawrinka leading the head-to-head series 7-3. Wawrinka will have the advantage in confidence and self-belief following his tremendous victory in Melbourne and is also holds a 5-0 record against Seppi in hard court contests.
