Recently crowned world No. 5 Simona Halep withdrew from the Sony Open in Miami on Friday morning, ahead of her scheduled second round match-up against Australian qualifier Casey Dellacqua. The top ranked Romanian cited a right toe injury as the reason behind her bowing out from the tournament.
Jana Cepelova replaced the Romanian in the draw as a lucky loser, but lost in three sets to Dellacqua.
Halep is coming off a successful fortnight at Indian Wells, where she reached the semi-finals before losing to Radwanska in straight sets. While she was unable to lift her second title of the season, she still defeated many high-level competitors in the process, including Lucie Safarova and Eugenie Bouchard.
