A first-time match-up between fast-rising Simona Halep and Australia’s Casey Dellacqua is scheduled to take place in the quarter-final stage of the BNP Paribas Open on Wednesday afternoon. It is the first time they will meet on the professional tour and will likely be an entertaining battle for a spot in the semis at Indian Wells.
Simona Halep once again battled back from the brink of defeat in her fourth round contest against Canadian Eugenie Bouchard. Halep stormed through the first set 6-2, but watched in horror as Bouchard snatched six consecutive games in the second set to level the match. She would then go down a break 3-4 in the final set, but would immediately break back and snatch the match a few games later 6-4. Following a similar affair in her third round contest against Safarova, Halep is proving to be a resilient force on the tour, as she makes her way through to her first Premier Mandatory level WTA tour event.
Australian qualifier Casey Dellacqua advanced through to the quarter-final after Lauren Davis was forced to withdraw before their match because of a gastrointestinal illness. The quarter-final round is easily the biggest stage that Dellacqua has been to on the WTA Tour, and will be looking to continue her hot streak to the semis.
This is the first time these two competitors will meet on the WTA tour and will likely be an entertaining match-up. Halep should hold a singificant edge over her opponent, yet she appeared tired following her match and spoke of her “heavy legs” and feeling the pressure of being a Top 10 competitor. With Dellacqua being the fresher of the two competitors, Halep will need to find the strength to battle through another tough opponent after two gruelling three set battles in the previous two rounds.
Prediction: Simona Halep in Three Sets
