Three-time finalist Rafael Nadal is through to the Round of 16 in Miami, where he will meet the Italian No. 1 Fabio Fognini. The two meet on three occasions on the ATP tour – all in 2013 – with Rafa holding an undefeated 3-0 record against the Italian. Have a look at the Nadal vs Fognini Head to Head.
Top-seeded Rafael Nadal continued his onslaught into the fourth round in Miami, following his 6-1, 6-0 decimation of Denis Istomin on Monday afternoon. It was another strong performance from the Spaniard, who struck 3 aces and won 77% of his first serves and an impressive 87% of his second serve points.
Nadal has now dropped a mere five games in the last four sets of tennis he has played in Miami. He will look to maintain his stranglehold on his portion of the draw when he faces the talented Italian Fabio Fognini on Tuesday evening.
“He has an amazing talent. Great forehand, great backhand, especially the forehand, but he’s able to hit winners from every part of the court,” said Nadal. “He’s an opponent sometimes that can be unpredictable, and it’s difficult to play against these kind of players, especially when they are playing well and Fognini is playing well.”
Fabio Fognini arrived at his second consecutive Masters 1000 fourth round after defeating Roberto Bautista Agut 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 on Monday. The Italian, not uncharacteristically, appeared distracted at portions of the match, yet ultimately closed it out in just over two hours.
Fognini will be looking for his first ever victory over the world No. 1. Nadal leads the head-to-head series 3-0 and is determined to rebound from his poor showing at Indian Wells with a first-time title win in Miami. While this has the potential to be an entertaining affair at times, Nadal has been ferocious this week in Miami and could make it another quick one on Tuesday evening.
